AGRA PROVISION FARMERS DAY KICKS OFF IN AROAB

Agra ProVision and Aroab Farmers’ Association (FA) will host a farmers’ day in Aroab on 20 February, 2015 at the Aroab Farmers’ Association Hall. Under the theme, “Optimised Production”, the event will expose participants to farming alternatives that can be considered for acceleration, relevance and optimum production in southern Namibia.

The farmers’ day will last half a day, with a combination of different topics and themes to discuss. The first topic of the day is “Defining what optimised production is”, giving a brief of how it fits within the area’s farming context. This will be followed by a lecture on “The effect of climate change on rangeland management,” to be discussed in the context of the carrying capacity of the area, how it has changed since the 1960s, and what theories a farmer can put into practise for alternative management; to augment commercial livestock farming income. Another topic of discussion is “Modern technology for modern farming,” exploring and discussing alternative energy sources, predator control methods and modern farming applications.

Dagmar Honsbein, General Manager of Agra ProVision said that the theme will look at various farming aspects, from marginal methods to enhanced agriculture practises as a fundamental activity for business profitability and production efficiency. “Looking at the current trends in farming, innovative farming methods can and should be implemented to raise productivity and efficiency. This will benefit the farms, the producers and the yield of the farms, ultimately leading to a stronger farming sector for Namibia.”

To ensure the event addresses ongoing farming challenges on animal health in the area, Agra ProVision has arranged for the State Vet for //Karas Region, Dr Annamie Louwrens, to give a presentation on the “Common diseases, body condition and other livestock health aspects.” This will be complemented by a lecture on “Assisted breeding methods – a viable alternative”, with a focus on veterinary field services such as artificial insemination and embryo transfers. All the presentations and lectures will be addressed by our Namibian experts who understand local situations and farming conditions.

Ms Honsbein emphasised the importance of this session for any and all stakeholders in the region that take farming seriously. These various stakeholders include; representatives from Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, farmers from diverse background, livestock breeders, academics and the general public.
