AGRA PLEDGES N$1,550,000 IN SUPPORT OF NATIONAL FMD PREVENTION EFFORTS

Agra Limited has pledged N$1,550,000 in support of the national Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) prevention effort, following the official launch of the FMD Support Fund by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform at the Ministerium on 26 February 2026.

The commitment includes N$1,000,000 in direct financial support to the national fund, N$500,000 allocated towards strengthened internal biosecurity protocols across all Agra Auction facilities nationwide, and a further N$50,000 pledged by the Agra Staff Initiative Fund (ASIF), funded entirely through voluntary employee contributions.

Agra’s N$1,000,000 cash contribution directly strengthens national prevention and response capacity. Beyond this, the additional N$500,000 allocation will fund enhanced precautionary measures at all Agra Auction facilities and livestock events. These include the deployment of disinfectant-equipped firefighting units, provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) for operational teams, installation of permanent and mobile vehicle and pedestrian disinfection systems, including structured footbath stations, and the rollout of formalised awareness and communication protocols at all auction points. Biosecurity training will furthermore be integrated into Agra ProVision training programmes to ensure industry-wide awareness and compliance.

Complementing the corporate pledge, the Agra Staff Initiative Fund (ASIF) has contributed N$50,000 in support of the national effort. This fund is entirely sustained through voluntary monthly contributions from Agra employees. ASIF reflects the compassion, unity, and shared responsibility of Agra’s people and the company values they live by. This collective contribution underscores the understanding that an FMD outbreak would have far-reaching consequences for our agricultural industry, the country’s economy, and livelihoods.
In parallel, Agra has intensified its national awareness drive through coordinated social media campaigns, print platforms, and radio engagement to ensure the broader agricultural community remains informed and vigilant. Dedicated biosecurity product kits have also been introduced at all Agra branches nationwide, equipping farmers with practical tools to implement preventative measures at farm level. This combined financial commitment and operational response underscores Agra’s proactive leadership and determination to protect Namibia’s livestock industry from the severe consequences of a potential FMD outbreak.

Agra acknowledges the severe impact that a potential FMD outbreak could have on the agricultural sector and the broader Namibian economy. An outbreak in disease-free zones would have devastating consequences for farmers, auctions, exports, and national food security.
