Value adding, sometimes a wolf in a sheep skin?
Value-adding has become a buzz-word in agricultural circles. It is a term that to a certain extent inherently refers to patriotism, to pride, to being less dependent, to more money in one’s own pocket and to many more such noble terms. It is however very relevant to ask whether value is always added in all value-adding processes and if so, for whose benefit?

Swakara strives upwards with highest prices ever
Of the 52,187 Swakara pelts on offer, 100% were sold by Agra in Copenhagen, Denmark on 10 September 2006. An average price of 390 Danish Krone (DKK) was attained, representing a decrease of 4.75% compared with the DKK 410.00 achieved in April 2006. In American dollar the pelt price remained constant at US$ 66. This decrease can largely be attributed to the weakening of the US$ against the Danish Krone. At the last auction in April this year the buyers were able to buy US$66 for DKK 410 compared with the DKK 390 this time. The average price in Namibian dollar of NAD 494.04 reflects an increase of 21.07% compared with the NAD 408.05 of the previous auction.

Interesting case study: a region takes off
The region Beelitz, approximately 50km from Berlin in Germany, is home to forestry, agriculture and a relatively sparse industrial sector in spite of its proximity to Berlin. In terms of forestry, the sandy soil poses some limitations on profitability as the pine grows slowly under these soil conditions whilst the microclimate around the lakes offers good fruit harvests. In essence, the region offers interesting relaxation possibilities.
