Since its inception the following clear objectives were set for the stud:

Produce hardy well-adapted cattle with constitution and capacity under extensive farming practices.    To keep the best young bull every year to be evaluated in the commercial herd before it is used in the stud herd.

To produce sound bulls for the stud and commercial beef market.    A personal strict selection process, followed by the breeds society's annual inspection, to visibly retain the best structurally sound animals.

Docile cattle with good strong muscling.    Sale bulls are clinically tested by a veterinarian and semen evaluation of each bull is available.

Easy calving cows with excellent mothering characteristics and nurturing instincts. Cows with good reproductive records.    We participate in shows with a few selected animals to promote and advertise our stud. Only self-bred cattle with our OKB brand are presented.

Through the family relations of our main bloodlines we aim to select for superior characteristics and to bind them into the herd.    New bloodlines are introduced by artificial insemination and we have also embarked on a program of embryo-flushings of our superior females to enhance the effectiveness of our cow herd.

Through extensive records, useful assessment of various characteristics and BLUP-evaluations can be made.    One of our main objectives is the establishment of long-term relationships with satisfied clients.

  Okabra Brahmans -
Objectives & Performance

We are presently at the forefront of modern stud breeding techniques and market requirements: be it genetic trait evaluations, meat tenderness markets, DNA recording; evaluation of structural soundness or simply well adapted, hardy and productive cattle for extensive cattle breeding in Southern Africa, keeping our valuable beef export market requirements, be it to South Africa or the European Union, in mind.

We do specialize in White/grey Brahman cattle with a solid foundation of the Mansotype cattle with emphasis on excellent beef production. The cattle have been meticulously selected and reared from the beginning with scientific selection methods and performance recording schemes, and recently with the use of Breedplan. A breed objective has been set for various traits for our production environment. New stud bulls or foreign semen have been selected accordingly. Selective annual artificial insemination has been an important part of our breeding program.

We have supplied hundreds of Brahman bulls not only to the commercial and communal farming sector but also into various stud herds. Virtually all of our stud bulls are extensively tested in our commercial herds before being ranked as stud bulls! It has been one of our fundamental principles to adhere to using stud bulls along close family lines (with grand-grand sons now in the mating herd) but also attending to new superior bloodlines for genetic improvement.

The breeding goes back to Sugarland Loxacrata 63 and 115; Rexcrata 455; Sugarland Rexcrata 229/3; HBS 76 106; HBS 82 112; HBS88/149; BPM 307 90; JDH Remington Manso 784/2; V8 700/3; HS82/179; HS83/105; HS 94/86 (Louis); Diamond A 27/4 and various other well known sires. Our selected best young bulls are tested annually in various herds.

We have been awarded the second price as Southern African Brahman Stud Breeder of the Year for 2003 and 2004 by the Landbouweekblad – Pick ‘n Pay – Breedplan competition amongst over 500 Brahman Breeders in Southern Africa! We invite you to visit our herd and enjoy our hospitality!

In November 2005 the OKABRA Brahman stud was awarded the first prize as Brahman Breeder of the year as well as the second overall price as stud-breeder of the year amongst 10 breeds in Southern Africa! An achievement we are particularly proud of!

TAURUS South Africa has selected one of our stud bulls, OKABRA King OKB94/31, for semen sales through their Beef Semen Catalogue. He was a junior champion bull in Namibia.

Performance records of our herd are summarized in the latest EBV-evaluation of the BREEDPLAN program!
