The pelts were purchased by 21 buyers, while others actively made bids but weren't successful. The major buyers were the agents from England, with Japan second and Germany third. The buyer from Japan was also the largest single buyer. Buyers from the USA, Hong Kong, Greece and Turkey also participated in the auction.
The inspector prior to the auction was lively as usual which shows that swakara is still in demand. The decrease can be ascribed to a concurrence of several circumstances of which the warm winter experienced in the pelt-wearing countries had the greatest influence. The dealers still have stock and thus purchased only very cautiously and selectively. On top of this the uncertainty in the USA and the German economy and the earlier auction. The largest decrease occurred in the curl-type pelts and the lower grades increasing the gap between the good and the poorer pelts. The top Namibian producer (with more than 250 pelts) for this auction was Giel Karsten from Karasburg who sold 269 pelts at an average of NAD 512.77, and the top RSA producer Hottie Vlok from Prieska, who sold 319 pelts at an average of R443.46.
